Week 4 Embroidered Centipede
Featured Stitch: Fly Stitch & Blanket Stitch
The Green Legged Centipede
The Green Legged Centipede or Scolopendra sp. is an aggressive little predator and can be found in Asia, Australia, America, Thailand, Russia, and India. They produce venom that they use on their prey and can bite people if they’re scared.
How-To Embroidery Stitch Guide
FEATURED STITCH
How To Do Blanket Stitch (body)
Make a diagonal stitch but hold onto the thread. Bring your needle up at a right angle to the two points of the stitch (see below). Hook the loose thread over the needle and put the needle from the fabric. Make another diagonal stitch and repeat.
How To Do Fly Stitch (body)
Make a stitch but hold onto the thread. Bring your needle up at the middle of your stitch but at a point slightly lower. Hook the loose thread over the needle. Bring the needle through the fabric and make a tiny stitch over the thread.
How To Do Satin Stitch (body)
Neat, straight stitches stacked next to each other. Used to fill large areas.
How To Do Chain Stitch (antennae)
Bring the needle up and back down in the same place, holding onto the thread so you’re left with a loop. Bring your needle up one stitch along and hook the loop over it. Pull the needle until the loop tightens. Then bring the needle back down in the same spot, holding onto the loop of thread again. And repeat.
How To Do Backstitch (legs)
Stitching Instructions
Green Legged Centipede
Body
Take 6 strands of brown DMC 3781 colored thread and fly stitch the segment lines down the middle of your centipede’s body.
Swap to 4 strands and, starting with a backstitch to catch the bottom leg stump (above left in picture group), blanket stitch the sides of your centipede starting at the bottom and working to the top.
When you get to the top, make a fly stitch for the jaw. Then a single straight stitch to finish it off. See bottom row in picture group.
Lastly, make a straight stitch across the neck. Below right in picture group.
Eyes
Continuing with your 4 strands of 3781, fill in each eye with 2 straight stitches, one on top of another, to make them round.
Inner Body & Head
Take 4 strands of beige DMC 612 color thread and fill in the body segments with 5-7 satin stitches per segment.
Fill in the head in the same way (we will outline it later when we do the antennae).
Legs
Take 3 strands of green DMC 831 color thread and backstitch all of the little legs.
Antennae
Take 2 strands of your 3781 thread and outline the head.
Now stitch the chunky part of the antennae using chain stitch.
Stitch the next section with 2 straight stitches, one on top of the other.
Lastly, stitch the final antennae section with 1 straight stitch.
Your Mr Centipede is all done!
