Behind the Stitching: Barry Brooch Wings
Hello my stitching lovelies. We’re embarking on a little video series adventure.
We’re remaking my Barry (the Stumpwork Death’s Head Hawkmoth) as a brooch! And I’m taking you behind the scene’s and in front of the hoop as I play with this fun little project and experiment with some modifications to my original design. We’ll also be road testing ‘Brooch Barry’ once he’s done so stay with me as I wing it into brooch making. Today – those cute little wire slip wings get a rethink. 🖤
Brooching the Subject
I’ve made some edits to my original wings to make this Barry more brooch friendly.
I’ve decided I’m going to try leaving the main wing color as bare fabric so I wanted something vibrant and a little thicker – I’ve doubled up the fabric and picked Kona cotton fabric’s in shades ‘Espresso’ the darkest brown and ‘Sunny’ a dark orangey yellow as I want ‘new’ Barry to be really dark and moody.
I’ve also used much thicker wire for his ‘ittle wings – 0.5mm thickness or ’24 gauge’ so if you’re Amazoning craft/jewellery wire you know what to look for. (Usually I’d use 0.3mm for stumpwork pieces but this one has to stand up to the wear and tear of a brooch). My Goldilocks approach of trying all the wires has paid off, 0.5mm seems ‘just right’.
